THE SACRED ENCOUNTER

Set in the stage of a post-war medieval world, this CG short film conveys a knight's journey and his encounter with a mysterious pastor in the cathedral.

In this team project, I served as both a character artist and environment artist. My individual contributions included characters, the interior of the cathedral environment, cameras, video editing, and color grading.

Time Spent: 3 months

Software Used: Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Unreal Engine

Environment Breakdown

With some assets our former team member provided, I worked on the prop modeling, textures, and lighting. Aside from using directional light and exponential fog, we also used god-ray blueprints, artificial light, and particles to create a more interesting look.

We used world-aligned textures for the walls and ceiling to ensure a cohesive look.

Important Cinematic Shots

When considering camera angles, we experimented with incorporating various shots, including wide shots to introduce the entire environment, medium shots, and over-the-shoulder shots to depict character encounters, among others.

I created this hero asset for our ending scene, where the pastor hands something to the knight. I prepared a set of original textures and toggled the emissive map for the material transition effect later.

Hero Asset

To achieve a more natural camera perspective between the knight and the pastor, I additionally used a camera shaking blueprint to simulate this tremulous effect.

I created a shader that allows us to change the material of an object with a dissolve effect. In the sequencer, we showcased the original texture we created for the hero asset and then modified the emissive map.
